What is an Electric Knife?

An electric knife is an efficient tool that eases the work of cutting meats, vegetables, breads and other foodstuffs in your kitchen. It works faster than the traditional knife. This is the knife that you want to buy if you are tired of shredding that turkey every time that you use a traditional knife. As mentioned above, you can either get yourself a cordless one that uses a battery or one that has a cable. Electric knives come with serrated blades that are made of stainless steel, and they can be removed for cleaning when you're done using them. They are safe and easy to use.

The electric knife is the preferred knife for campers too because it quickly slices through any foodstuffs such as steaks from a hunt. The other advantage of the best electric knives comes to those that are suffering from conditions such as arthritis or injuries of sorts that prevent them from using too much energy on a normal knife. The electric knife easily tears through any foods that they might need to cut without them putting in too much energy.

Electric Knives vs Traditional Knives

Traditional knives are still the most widely used knives in the world today, although electric knives are becoming more and more popular as the days go by. This is because of the easy and convenience that they bring into our ever-hectic lives where people are always in a hurry to get things done. We are going to look at some of the differences between these two knives, the best electric knife and the traditional knife.

The first and foremost difference is the physical difference, whereby the traditional knife has a blade fixed into a handle so that it can be used for cutting or as a weapon. Well, not much difference from the electric knife, only that the electric knife will require power in order for it to work.

The second difference between the best electric knife and the traditional knife is the traditional knife is mostly used for chopping minimal portions, and especially when it comes to steaks. The electric knife on the other hand, can be used for chopping generous amounts of steaks without faltering. All that you have to make sure of is that it is either charged or connected to the power and you're good to go.

The next difference between the electric and traditional knives is that the traditional knife portrays a safer image. The blades of the electric knife look more lethal because they are sharper. There is however, no need to worry at all as the electric knife is very safe. Just remember that it doesn’t matter whether you're using an electric knife or a traditional knife because as long as you handle them with care, you are safe.

The fourth difference between the two knives is the price. The prices of traditional knives are generally lower than electric knives, although the prices also vary depending on the brand. A high end traditional knife could easily fall in the same price bracket as some electric knives. If you are not the type to go for high end brands, then the traditional knife will definitely be cheaper than the electric knife.

Coming fifth is the fact that an electric knife could look more complicated to use as compared to a traditional knife. The electric knife will use either electricity or battery power and the best part about it is that the moment that you master how to use it, you might never look at a traditional knife again.

The sixth difference between a traditional knife and the best electric knife is the weight. The traditional knife is way lighter than the electric knife, although that might also depend on the type of knife it is. Knives like the butcher knives can be quite heavy, and especially since they sometimes have to cut through soft bones.

The seventh difference is the fact that some electric knives have cords while traditional do not. The cords could be an inconvenience to some because you will only have to work where there is a power point. And then there is the risk of other people tripping over the cord, or the cord smashing other things to the ground as you use the electric kettle.

Coming eighth is the fact that for the traditional knives you will use more energy than an electric knife. This is because the electric knife uses electricity or battery power to cut. This makes the electric knife popular amongst the aged, weak and also in commercial establishments where a lot of cutting is done on a daily basis.

The ninth difference between the two knives is the fact that before you master the electric knife, the traditional knife is generally easier and safer. You would have to seek guidance on using the electric knife and especially when making complicated cuts. An instructor can show you how to use it safely.

This final point is probably the main reason why most people would go for an electric knife over a traditional knife. Both of the electric and traditional knives can make the same cuts, but the difference is that the best electric knife makes things much easier and faster. You cannot even begin to compare the speeds of the two knives.

Well, there you have them. Those were just some of the differences between electric knives and traditional knives. There could be more. Now that you have seen the clear differences between the two knives, we can now step into the next chapter.

What to look for when buying an Electric Knife

It does not matter what you intend to use, electric knives come armed for all things cutting. There are some things that a person has to take into consideration when they are purchasing an electric knife, and we are going to look at some of them below:

The Length of the Blade

Depending on what you intend to use the electric knife for, their blades come in different lengths. Most people would probably want to go for the longest knife thinking that they can do a lot with it, but that is not the best option. In this case, we are going to look at the length of the blades in regards to meat. In the case of turkey, chicken and beef, a long knife, probably 9 to 10 inches long should do the trick for you. The longer the blade, the more the variety of the mentioned meats you can cut. When it comes fish meat, a smaller electric knife as that will get around tissues as you perform small cuts.

Blade Material

Stainless steel is a basic requirement when it comes to electric knives. Do not buy an electric kettle that does not have a stainless-steel blade. Watch out for synthetic material as it does not last long as stainless steel. Below are the reasons why stainless steel is the best:

  • The blade won't corrode, rust or tarnish over time.
  • Stainless steel is also extremely easy to clean.
  • The knife can be sharpened more easily.

Safety Features

Safety is an important thing when it comes to knives, and we should all take as much precaution as possible. You don’t want your young kids stumbling upon the electric knife and injuring themselves. When you are purchasing an electric knife, ensure to get one that has a double trigger or lock. This way, it will be harder to turn it on. It is also very important to keep the knife out of reach of children, in its package if it comes with one.

Amount of Precision Needed

As a general rule in the kitchen, an electric knife should always be sharp. You will also need to get the best electric knife with precision if you're going to be cutting foodstuff like fish or tomatoes. A blade that rotates would not be able to cut your slices of bread evenly, and it would mess up your cheese. The best type of electric knife that you should buy is one with a removable blade. Make sure that it is one that can cut with multiple blades so that you can change the blade according to what you intend to cut. The precision of a cut highly depends on the back and forth speed of the blade, and the faster the movement, the more precise.

Ease of Use

The ergonomics of a knife are what will actually determine whether to use an electric knife or not. Here is an example, you cannot expect to cut meat with a light blade because you might spend forever doing it. A light blade would probably work for bread, while a heavy blade for the steak. The best thing in this case would be to get yourself an electric knife that has a removable blade. This way, you can use different blades depending on what you want to cut. Another point to take into hand is to make sure that the electric knife has a hand contoured grip so that it fits comfortably in the hand. Handles with vinyl, silicon or rubber handles are the best. It is also very important to make sure that the knife works for you if you're left handed so that it is comfortable to hold.

Wired or Cordless

Having a wired electric knife that is plugged to a power supply might not be the most convenient option for most. This is because you cannot take the knife wherever you want as you are restricted to where there is a power outlet. The cord could easily act as a hazard, knocking things over. The plus of having a wired electric knife however, is powerful all the time. The battery powered electric knives could tend to become weaker as their charge weakens.

The battery powered electric knife, however does come with the advantage that you can carry it around to wherever you would like to use it. If you have several worktops and move around with your knife, this would be the option for you. Charging it would probably take a couple of hours to full charge.
