Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat

Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat Review

As a parent, you want your children to be safe at all times. You definitely want your child safe while they’re in the family car as anything can happen at any time, which is where a car seat comes into play. While safety is at the forefront of the things that you seek in a car seat, you also want one that looks nice, one that will let your child rear-face until they’re older (3 or 4 years of age) and face forward in a harness at the age of 5. You also want to do all of this at a budget friendly way. This Evenflo SureRide DXL convertible car seat review will break down the pros, cons, technical specs as well as the installation details so you can make an informative choice.

Parents should consider the Evenflo SureRide DLX convertible car seat. Not only can you get this car seat at an inexpensive price, but you’ll also keep this car seat until your children are in elementary school. Many parents don’t want to buy another car seat until their child can fit into a booster seat, which is usually around the age of 5. If this is the case, then the Evenflo SureRide DLX convertible car seat is perfect.

The Evenflo SureRide DLX convertible car seat is best suited for the following children:

  • Children who are between 5-40 pounds (rear facing)
  • Children who are between 20-65 pounds (forward facing)

Components

  • 2 positions for crotch buckle
  • 6 positions for harness slot (4 positions face the rear, 2 face the front)
  • FAA approved (parents can use it on an aircraft)
  • Lightweight
  • Seat expiration date: 6 years after first use
  • Made in the United States

Measurements

Slot heights for harness:

  • 6.5”
  • 8.5”
  • 10.5”
  • 14.5”
  • 17”
  • 19.25”
  • Widest point: 19”
  • Height of the shell: 26.5”
  • Depth of the crotch strap: 4.5” and 6.5”
  • Depth of the seat: 12.5”
  • Weight of the seat: 9.7 pounds

Installing the Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat

To install the seat in a rear facing position, engage the recline foot to make a good angle. If your car’s seats are at a steep slope and you need a bit more recline to install the seat, use a towel or blanket under the recline foot. Make sure that you install the seat so that the line of the recline that’s on the side of the car seat is at the same level as the bottom of your vehicle. This particular car seat is on the tall side, so it’s going to take up a lot of space in your back seat. Therefore, this car seat may not be the best solution for compact cars.

Installing this seat tends to be an easy process. However, taking the LATCH strap from the path that faces your child forward to the path that points your child to the rear of your car can be a hassle. To top it all off, when you take this car seat out of its box, the LATCH strap is looped through the forward facing belt path. If you have a newborn or younger child on your hands, you’ll have to move the strap before doing anything else. However, moving the strap isn’t too difficult.

When installing the SureRide DLX car seat, lift the cover off of the seat and thread the LATCH strap under the harness straps that you can usually find in the lap area. Take care not to interlace the straps. Unfortunately, the white strap that holds the LATCH strap to the car seat grips the LATCH very tightly. It makes you want to cut off the first strap, just so that you can free up the LATCH strap.

How To Fit the Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat To Your Child

This car seat can fit most children between 5 and 65 pounds. If you have a younger child on the lower end of that line, you’ll find that the fit is great. The SureRide has a wide range that it needs to properly fit, so the harness is fitted with 2 loop sets so that parents can shorten it for their babies. If you have a baby that weighs up to 10 pounds, you can actually shorten the buckle and thread it from the rear into a front facing slot.

Unfortunately, this car seat has a big gap between the 3rd and 4th harness slot sets. This can cause a slightly uncomfortable fit on children who are facing the rear of the vehicle. While you might be able to do some experimenting on your end to remedy this problem, other parents have found that there’s not much they can do about this situation other than facing their child forward. However, due to safety concerns you shouldn’t do this unless the harness absolutely won’t stay on their shoulders.

Maintenance Concerns

The good news is that parents can easily remove the cover from the car seat. Just throw it into the washing machine and dry it in your dryer. Clean the harness with a damp cloth.

Flying With the Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat

The SureRide is extremely lightweight and is FAA approved. The car seat won’t adjust to a full recline on a rear facing seat. This shouldn’t bother you unless you have a newborn baby that will need this feature. Some parents have also found that the car seat will not fit through the airport x-ray machines. If you plan on flying with the SureRide, arrive at the airport early to account for inspections.

Advantages

  • Easy installation
  • Lightweight
  • Nice looking
  • Easy maintenance
  • Made in the USA
  • Affordable

Disadvantages

  • Doesn’t fit through airport x-ray machines
  • Large gap between 3rd and 4th set of harness loops
  • Moving the LATCH strap can be a pain

Is The Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat Worth It?

The short answer: The SureRide is a lightweight, affordable and great looking car seat that will keep your children safe when they are in the car with you. While there are a few misses that make installation and use more of a pain, you’ll find that the SureRide offers you and your child many advantages that can be hard to find in other car seats at this price point.

Maclaren Mark II Stroller

The Maclaren group takes credit for inventing umbrella strollers in 1965. Since then they have made numerous umbrella strollers, and the Mark II model is worth reviewing. The stroller is a lightweight that it is estimated to weigh seven pounds.

It well designed for larger kids, as the seat does not recline and canopy will not protect infants sufficiently. However, the maneuverability of the stroller is one of the best the market can offer. It performs superbly on bumpy grounds, pavements, and grass thanks to its all-wheel suspension. The padding of the seat is also designed for larger kids and not infants as it is relatively stiff. Nonetheless, the fabric is machine washable, and the umbrella can easily be stored at the back of the seat.

When purchasing the Mark II stroller, it is important we bring to your attention of two design issues. First, the wheels smudge the fabric when the stroller is folded, and it is better to put a soft material between the two. Two, the safety harness is touchier to buckle than on any other stroller you will get on the market today. They are not deal killers, but surely they are worth mentioning before you make the decision to make the purchase. If light weight is your primary choice, then here is the stroller that suits you.

Graco Mysize 65 Convertible Car Seat Review

Graco Mysize 65 Convertible Car Seat Review

When it comes to our family, both safety and comfort are very important things. Whether it is in our homes, offices and or vehicles we want an ease of mind when we think about our family's safety and comfort. So at homes and offices we take measures like getting a security system installed or putting additional locks. Beefing up security is important to ensure safety. When it comes to our vehicles, it is very important that we adhere to all the safety precautions, such as fastening our seatbelts and abiding by traffic laws. Before you fasten your seatbelt, it is important that you are seated comfortably. In the case of infants, it is imperative that the guardians or parents purchase a convertible infant car seat that is comfortable and provides proper security to the child. Most parents are familiar with a convertible infant car seats, it is a seat specifically designed to infants that can easily be fitted in the rear car seat with the help of a seatbelt and latches. There are many different car seats or boosters in the market, for most parents it is imperative that they get the best one. This is because comfort and safety of your child are two things that you can never compromise.

Keeping this in mind, we are going to review the Graco Mysize 65 Convertible Car Seat. Graco is a well-known brand in the convertible car seat business. Founded in 1942, the company has extensive history in the car booster seat business and pretty much has perfected the art of creating safe and secure car boosters. It currently has four different seat types, namely Mysize, Fit4Me, Size4Me and Head Wise, all of which meet the set safety standards of car boosters. The features and size of all the variations are pretty much the same and to provide extra comfort they all come with a comfy headrest.

The MySize™ 65 convertible car seat is a durable car booster that enables you to carry a rear-facing infant up to 40 pounds. If you prefer the infant to be facing you then its 5-point harness and exceptional support allow you to carry a child ranging from 20 to 65 pounds. The Simply Safe Adjust™ harness system on the booster lets the seat “grow” with the child since it allows you to manually adjust both the harness and headrest heights. This convertible car seat for infant comes with a InRight™ latch system for one-second latch attachment. Making it easy for virtually anyone to use. That is why many parents prefer Graco, there is no complications to it and it provides exceptional support for children.

What is a latch?

When it comes to latches, the car seat and the car both come equipped with them. The two compliment each other for secure locking. The car has lower anchors and top tether anchors while the car seats tend to have a connecting hook which you can attach to the car latches. While some convertible car seat are secured with seat belts, the latching functionality is more secure as the lower anchor are used to safely place the car seat to the vehicle with the help of the top tethers. The latch system ensures the convertible car seat does not move around too much even on bumpy road, making the car ride smooth and ensuring the child stays in place on the car seat.

MySize 65 Features:

  • EPS foam
  • Head/body support that can easily be removed if needed
  • Three different reclining and two buckle positions to ensure both comfort and security for your child
  • Safe Seat Engineered seating with Side Impact Testing so you can rest assured your baby will be completely safe no matter what happens
  • Removable seat cushions so you can easily wash it when needed

That is not all, the Gracoy MySize 65 seat comes with:

No-rethread harness: Some harness systems can be a pain but not Graco’s Simple Safe Adjust. The no-rethread adjustment system allows you to change the harness level, lift the headrest higher, with a simple lift of the red button on the convertible car seat. All you have to do is lift the the button and then adjust the headrest up or down accordingly. This is a wonderful feature which allows the car seat to “grow” and be used for years as the child grows.

Premium lower anchor connectors: Latching the convertible car seat to your car is no longer tasking. MySize 65 comes with lower anchor connectors that are easily released with just a push of a button. Making it easy for you to latch on to your vehicle rear seat.

Recline angle indicator: To ensure the car seat is at the right incline level it comes with a ball leveler on the side. The leveler allows you to check the degree of incline and determine if you need to provide more incline or not. If you still require more incline for the seat then you can use a rolled towel to achieve the right angle. Not only that, it also comes with a built-in cup holder so you can easily fit the child’s bottle in the holder for easy access.

Leg room: When rear seat facing, this convertible car seat doesn’t come with exceptional leg room. However, for infants up to 3 years of age it provides ample room and should not be a concern for safety. Infants can easily move their legs around and sit in their desired position and older children can sit easily with their legs crossed in the seat.

Separate lower anchor connector straps: Earlier models of this convertible car seat were equipped with two sets of lower anchor connector: one for rear facing while the other for forward facing. Newer models come with just set of connector due to their slightly lower price. Which is not much of a problem and you can purchase according to your preference since most parents tend to choose one more over the other.

Why Buy the Graco MySize 65 Convertible Car Seat

The Graco MySize 65 is one of the premier car seats in a market filled with mostly mediocre car seats. You want to ensure your infant is completely secure and comfortable while you take them out for a ride. The ride itself may not be that smooth with bumpy roads and speed bumps but you want to ensure your child is seated in a car seat that provides absorption of the bumps and doesn’t toss your child around. The MySize 65 convertible car seat does exactly that. Your child will be completely secure whether you fit the seat using the latch option or with a seat belt.

At the price point of the car seat, which is fairly impressive compared to other car seats, you would think the seat doesn’t provide enough comfort to your child. You can press down on the seat for yourself and notice how firm yet soft it is. This allows it to absorb the bumps as you and your child ride around town. The seat has a nice bucket for your child to easily fit into and get cozy in. It also comes with a cup holder so you can leave a bottle for your child to have while out on your trip.

The seat can be adjusted as your child grows making it a great long term buy. It has a “life-span” of 6 years so you can easily use it for your child from infancy to as they become children. The reason why car seats have an expiration date is due to the fact that material wear down and it is recommended you get a new car seat as standard and other things change with time.

  • First thing you need to keep in mind is that the MySize 65 convertible car seat has the capacity to hold a child up to 40 lbs or 18 kg.
  • For safety, it is recommended that children and infants weighing less than 22 lbs (10 kg) should be placed in a rear-facing convertible car seat.
  • Place car seat rear-facing on the vehicle back seat.
  • Make sure latch strap or vehicle seat belt is routed through the rear-facing belt path marked with a blue label.
  • Install this car seat tightly in your vehicle. Car seat should not move at the rear-facing belt path more than 1” (2.5 cm) from side to side, front to back.
  • Check recline level making sure the ball is within the blue area.
  • Harness straps need to be even with or just below the top of child’s shoulders and chest clip is at armpit level.

Please note that The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and NHTSA recommend that children should be rear-facing until they are 2 or until they reach the maximum rear-facing height and weight. This car seat can remain rear-facing up to 40 lb.

When reading the level indicator, check to see that the age is right as below:

  • If the ball is entirely in light blue, the restraint is level for infants 0+ months in age.
  • If the ball is in light blue and dark blue, the restraint is level for a child 3+ months in age.
  • If the ball is in RED, child restraint is NOT level. You must adjust your recline position.

  4. Recline the car seat and pull out the handle on front of child restraint and adjust to rear-facing position 1.
  5. Place car seat, rear-facing, on the back seat of the vehicle and center the car seat between the lower latch anchors. The base should sit as flat as possible on the vehicle seat.
  6. Extend the latch strap. For easier installation, extend the latch strap to its maximum length by pressing the grey button and pulling on the strap.
  7. Check the level indicator. The car must be on level ground. The ball must be completely in the blue zone. Readjust if needed. For infants 3 months and under, the ball must completely cover the light blue circle. If needed, rolled towels may be placed under the car seat at the vehicle seat crease, until the ball is completely in the blue zone.
  8. Attach latch connectors to the car’s lower latch anchors. The latch strap should lie flat and not be twisted.
  9. Tighten the latch strap. Press down firmly in the center of the car seat while tightening the latch strap. You may need to tighten through the rear facing belt path as shown.
  10. Test for tightness by grabbing the sides of the seat where the latch strap is and slide the car seat side-to-side and front-to-back. If the seat moves less than 1”, (2.5 cm), it is tight enough.
  11. Check the Level Indicator. The vehicle must be on level ground and the ball must be completely in the blue zone. Re-adjust if needed. For infants 3 months and under, the ball must completely cover the light blue circle. If needed, rolled towels may be placed under the car seat at the vehicle seat crease, until the ball is completely in the blue zone.

  2.  Recline the car seat and then pull out the handle in front of child restraint and adjust to rear-facing position
  3.  Place the car seat, rear-facing on the back seat of the vehicle. The base should sit as flat as possible on the vehicle seat.

The seat belt should lie as flat as possible and not be twisted. Note: It may be easier to route the vehicle seat belt by lifting seat pad up to expose the belt path. Make sure the vehicle seat belt is in front of the buckle strap when the buckle is in the inner-most position, and in behind when in the outer-most position.

Between the two types of fastening the convertible car seat to your vehicle seat we would recommend going with the latch option. That option is much more secure than the seat belt option and we found it to be much easier also thanks to the lower latch being easily accessible with the help of a button. You can try both the option to see for yourself which one you prefer over the other and which one is easier for you.

  • Place Harness Straps Over Child’s Shoulders and Buckle - You will hear a “click” when the buckle tongues are securely attached. Pull up on each buckle tongue to make sure it is securely attached.
  • Be Sure the Harness Straps Are at the Proper Height Rear- Facing -Harness straps should be at or just below the child’s shoulders. Top of head must be 1” (2.5 cm) below the headrest adjustment lever.
  • Forward-Facing - Harness straps should be at or just above the child’s shoulders. Top of child’s ears below top of headrest.
  • To Raise or Lower Headrest/ Harness Height - Squeeze the red adjustment handle and move headrest for the proper harness height.
  • Check the Buckle Position - The correct slot is the one that is closest to your child without being underneath them.
  • To Adjust Crotch Strap Recline the car seat and locate the metal retainer under the car seat shell. 8. Rotate Metal Retainer and Insert It Up Through the Shell and Pad From the top of the car seat, pull the crotch buckle out.
  • Insert Metal Retainer in the New Crotch Buckle Slot Reach underneath the car seat and pull the metal retainer through.
  • Pull up on crotch strap to make sure it is secured.
  • Buckle the Chest Clip - You will hear a “click” when the chest clip is securely buckled.
  • Pull All the Slack Out from Around the Waist - Pull up on the harness strap while pushing the chest clip down. Do this to both sides.
  • Tighten the Harness by Pulling the Harness Adjustment Strap = When you are not able to pinch any of the harness webbing at your child’s shoulder, the harness is tight enough. A snug harness should not allow any slack. It lies in a relatively straight line without sagging. It does not press on the child’s flesh or push the child’s body into an unnatural position.
  • Raise the chest clip to the child’s armpit level.

If you are looking for a reasonable yet reliable car seat for your child. We highly recommend the Graco MySize 65 convertible car seat. In a market of car seats that are made of plastic and do not provide enough support and comfort to children, especially infant. Benefits of Wifi Baby Monitors

There are three main benefits of purchasing a Wifi baby monitor. First and foremost, Wifi baby monitors let you check on a child without physically going into the room. You will be able to see if your baby is still sleeping without waking him or her up—and parents never want to wake a sleeping baby. Second, they give you the ability to see exactly what is happening in the room where your child is located even when you are somewhere else. A parent who needs to travel for business, for example, can keep tabs on what is happening at home. And third, monitors make it possible to record what happens in a room all the time. This gives parents the extra assurance that their babysitter is doing the right things.

Up first is the top-of-the line Nest Indoor Security Camera. The camera syncs with an app that you can put on any smartphone, allowing you to check on your little one from anywhere. The camera also comes with two-way communication already built in and the ability to establish “motion-activated zones.” The camera can detect activity in specific zones and send you an automated alert, which is perfect for babies who move when they sleep. There’s no doubt the best part of this camera is its 24/7 live video feed and nonstop cloud recording (with subscription). This gives parents the peace of mind that if something happens while a babysitter is over, then they already have a backup copy of exactly what happened. The Nest Indoor Security Camera also comes with 1080p HD video streaming and a 130-degree angle view (wider than most on the market), and night vision capabilities that make the entire room visible. A notable drawback, however, is the fact that the camera does not come with the traditional hand-held monitoring device that other models have. You must have a smartphone, tablet, or computer to use it, which may be a significant drawback to buyers who don’t always want to have their phones turned on. Despite this drawback, the camera will likely last longer than the other baby monitors on our list and could potentially work for several years. For those interested in purchasing home security, the Nest Camera could also double as a basic reassurance against home invasion or robberies. All in all, I would recommend this high-end camera to parents who value the peace of mind that comes with a more expensive device.

Summer Infant Baby Zoom Camera

summer infant wifi baby monitor

The next camera on our list is the Summer Infant Baby Zoom Camera. Like the Nest Indoor Security Camera, this device is also equipped with an app that you can install on any smartphone to view your live feed from anywhere in the world. Unlike the Nest Camera, however, the Summer Infant Baby Zoom gives you a little more control over who gets access to your feed during specific times of the day. In other words, you can give friends and family a live feed into your baby monitor, but only when you want. Most importantly, the Baby Zoom Camera has a separate monitoring device that you can use apart from your smartphone or tablet which gives the product a more traditional feel than the Nest Cam. The device also boasts two-way communication capabilities with panning, scanning and zooming functionality. The app also lets parents take pictures and record videos for brief periods of time—which is very nice to have if your baby only seems to smile when he/she knows the camera is pointed somewhere else. In my opinion, the best part of the Summer Infant Baby Zoom Camera is how easy it is to set up. The marketing material says that you can start monitoring within minutes of opening the package; it is truly easy to get started. Given how the monitor is so easy to use, I would consider purchasing two or three cameras to create an integrated system of monitors for multiple rooms. This saves you the time of moving the camera whenever you want to let your baby take a nap in a different room, not to mention the ability to monitor multiple children at the same time.

Amcrest ProHD Wifi Baby Monitor and Security Camera

Best Wifi Baby Monitor

The third camera on our best-of-2017 list is the Amcrest ProHD Security Camera. This unit comes with parts from Sony and delivers 1080p video at a rate of 30 frames-per-second. Although the 90-degree viewing area is slightly narrower than the other models on our list, the camera can easily be setup by anyone with a Wifi signal in less than 60 seconds. The ten-foot power supply is a nice feature because you will not need to get a separate extension cord to place it on a high shelf. The camera can tilt up/down and side-to-side, and it arrives backed by a one-year warranty with customer support. Two-way audio allows you to communicate directly with someone on the other end, and the unit’s cutting-edge night vision technology gives you a 32-foot view in the dark. For new parents interested in recording and sharing limited amounts of video, this camera comes with 4 hours of convenient and free cloud storage. If you find that you thoroughly enjoy recording and sharing video, you can always purchase a subscription plan to record the video directly onto AmCrest’s cloud storage in unlimited quantities. For video enthusiasts who would prefer the security of physically owning the video data, you can upgrade your experience by separately purchasing a micro SD card or an AmCrest NVR, which stores the video locally in your house. The best part about this product is its flexibility to fulfill the needs of someone on a budget and someone who can spend more money for additional functionality.

LeFun Wifi Baby Monitor Camera

LeFun Wifi Baby Monitor

The final monitor that made our top-four list of baby monitors for 2017 is the LeFun Wireless Camera. Although this baby monitor is a clear step-down from some the other high-end brands on the market, it still comes with the essential built-in features that many new mothers want to see. Like the Nest Cam, the LeFun Camera does not have a dedicated handheld video device, but instead connects to any smartphone, tablet or computer. The camera delivers a 720p high resolution video stream, which is a sufficient quality for most parents. Like the other devices, the LeFun camera offers two-way audio communication through an easy-to-use app. You can also record videos to a local SD card, but not directly onto the cloud like the Nest Cam. In other words, if you value the ability to record and send videos of your baby to friends and family, the LeFun Camera can still get the job done, but it will require an additional step of loading the video files onto your computer. Shoppers will also have to look past the poorly written product description at the top of the Amazon page; the camera’s marketing team clearly does not speak English with native fluency. Many reviews on Amazon also note a slight delay of about two or three seconds for video streaming, but the ease-of-setup right out of the box makes up for this drawback. Most people hate the complications of setting up a new camera, installing various software packages, and connecting intricate wires. Not true with the LeFun Camera—even the least technologically talented parents will be using their new device within hours of receiving it. If you are on a budget but still want the functionality of some of the high-end baby monitors, then the LeFun Camera might be the right fit.

Best Convertible Car Seats – Buyers Guide

Are you looking to purchase a convertible car seat for your bundle of joy? In this buyers guide, we look at the best convertible car seats on the market in 2017 and have done a thorough analysis to come up with the best of the best. There are many on the market and it may be overwhelming to determine which ones are right for you. We have taken the guess work out of finding the best convertible car seat and have made it easy for you to pick one that suits you and your families needs.

What is a Convertible Car Seat?

Best Convertible Car SeatsA well-built convertible car seat will function as an essential safety feature for your child in the event of a traffic accident.  Unlike infant car seats which come with a detachable seat (many easily connect to strollers), convertible car seats can grow with your child and provide dedicated transportation inside a vehicle.  Children should always remain rear-facing until they are about two years old, at which point you can switch their convertible car seat to face forward.  They are securely fastened to the car’s seats using the seatbelt mechanism, and they provide an essential level of physical security for children and peace of mind for parents.

Are Convertible Car Seats Right For You?

Are you interested in purchasing one car seat for your child’s entire life?  Or did you already purchase an infant baby seat, and now need something bigger?  If you answered yes to either question, then you should shop around for the right convertible car seat.  A convertible car seat is perhaps the most widely recognized signal that your baby is no longer an infant, but not yet a small child capable of riding in a car unassisted.  Children spend more time in convertible seats than any other form of transportation, so it is crucial that you find the right model for your situation.  We will pay close attention to how easy each model is to install as well as its durability, convenience, and (most importantly) its safety features.  It is with these three things in mind that we will evaluate some of the best and most reputable brands on the market.

Best Convertible Car Seat Brands

Convertible Car Seat BrandsWhen it comes to purchasing a convertible car seat, the four most widely recognized brands on the market are Graco, Britax, Evenflo and Chicco.  Each brand offers a variety of models to fit different budgets.  As you will see, convertible car seats come with a variety of different features and safety mechanisms depending on your budget.  You can find a product that accomplishes the most important feature—the safety of your child—without draining your bank account.

Best Graco Convertible Car Seats

Graco MySize 65 Convertible Car Seat

Graco MySize 65 Convertible Car SeatThe Graco is the My Size 65 model  is one of the more popular Graco convertible car seat on the market.  This unit is specially designed to accommodate an infant as small as 4 lbs. or a child as big as 65 lbs.  The unit itself weighs just under 20lbs, making it light enough to comfortably carry with one hand.  The seat is only 19 inches in depth—small enough to be the perfect fit for any vehicle.  It comes with a five-point harness system and a machine-washable cushion (which is a must-have for long road trips).  Graco ensures that all its car seats can withstand rigorous crash safety tests, and the My Size 65 is no exception.  This car seat also comes with a cup holder on the (baby’s) right-hand side, which is essential.  It may be a little difficult for you to achieve the desired recline angle with Graco brands, but the harness and latch system on the My Size 65 make it almost impossible to incorrectly install.  In fact, if you are worried about improperly installing a car seat, then the simplicity and straightforward instructions on this model make it a contender. You can read a more in-depth review here.

Graco Contender 65 Convertible Car Seat

Graco Contender 65 Convertible Car SeatThe second Graco car seat on our list is the Contender 65 .  Like the My Size 65, the Contender can serve as a car seat for any child as small as 4 lbs. or as large as 65lbs.  You should measure your vehicle before you purchase the Contender—it has a whopping 27 inch depth, making it a tight fit for most cars.  It also comes with a cup holder on the baby’s right-hand side, and you have three color options to choose from.  All Graco models have the same five-point harnessing system, which is easy to master even for first-time parents.  As you might imagine from the price tag, the Contender is a small step down from the My Size 65.  The main culprit: a clear decrease in the amount of padding for your child, especially in the neck and torso.  The decrease in padding is only an issue when it comes to comfort, not safety.  If you have a baby that needs a lot of cushioning, then you might consider spending the extra $40 for the My Size 65.  If your child seems to be happy on any soft surface, then save your money and purchase the Contender 65. Graco My Ride 65 LX Convertible Car Seat

Graco My Ride 65 LX Convertible Car SeatThe third and final Graco model that you should consider is the My Ride 65.  Weighing at only about 16 lbs. and with a depth of just over 22 inches, the My Ride 65 will easily fit almost any vehicle.  Although this car seat represents a step down in price, it has many of the same features as the My Size 65.  It weighs less than 16 lbs. and comes with the exact same tethering/buckle system for your little one.  It also has comparable safety ratings in terms of protecting your child from injury in the event of a car crash.  It even has two cup holders instead of just one.  The most significant drawback concerns the car seat’s relative lack of cushioning for the baby’s head and body.  It should be quickly noted, however, that the padding only affects the child’s comfortability, not safety.  In fact, the straps touch the baby’s skin when he/she is sitting in the seat, which may be a problem for sensitive skin.  Taking these things into account, the Graco My Ride 65 is a solid choice for the comparatively low price with many of the same features as the more expensive model.

Best Britax Convertible Car Seats

Britax Advocate Clicktight Convertible Car Seat

Britax Advocate ClickTight Convertible Car SeatAnother well-known brand is Britax, which offers a range of car seats that fit any budget.  The Advocate is at the top of our list because it is a premium, high-end car seat, and it is the most expensive model Britax has on the market.  Weighing in at over 30 lbs., the Advocate is a large car seat designed for children who weigh up to 65 lbs.  As you might have guessed from the price, the Advocate comes with the most advanced and sophisticated padding technology on the market.  The seat has three layers of side impact protection, a patented ClickTight installation system, and an EZ buckle system.  It even has an indicator to tell you if your child is securely fastened in the seat.  Most impressively, the Advocate also puts a premium on your child’s comfort.  The car seat comes fully loaded with 14 adjustable headrest positions and a harness that does not touch the skin for most passengers.  I should mention that the car seat feels very sturdy and durable, giving parents the peace of mind that their child would be kept safe in a traffic accident.

Britax Marathon Clicktight Convertible Car Seat

Britax Marathon ClickTight Convertible Car SeatA step down from the Advocate, but still in the Britax family, is the Marathon.  This unit has many of the same features as the Advocate, but it is a little lighter at 28.4 lbs.  Most parents find that they use only three or four specific angles for their child’s headrest, so do not put too much emphasis on the fact that the Advocate comes with 12 pre-set angles (compared to 14 for the Advocate). The only other significant difference between the two models is the level of side impact protection—the Advocate only has one.  The real question comes down to this: is spending an additional $78 worth getting two extra layers of protection?  If you have the money, the answer is unquestionably yes.

Britax Roundabout G4. 1 Convertible Car Seat

Britax Roundabout G4.1 Convertible Car SeatBritax makes car seats that can fit any budget, like the Roundabout .  This model comes with 3 reclining positions and an easy-to-use five-point harness system.  The Roundabout represents a basic, entry-level car seat in the Britax line, but it still comes with several important safety features.  It has a layer of side impact protection combined with what the company calls a “SafeCell” impact-absorbing base.  Although the seat’s frame is made of steel, the unit only weighs 17.6 lbs., which ranks it as one of the lighter models on the market.  The car seat’s depth, however, comes in at 26 inches, which is on the longer side and may not fit every vehicle.  Unlike the Graco models discussed earlier, the Roundabout is only suitable for children over 5 and under 55 lbs.  These restrictions mean that the lifespan of the car seat will be slightly less than many other car seats on the market, which accommodate a child weighing up to 65 lbs.

Best Evenflo Convertible Car Seats

Evenflo Tribute LX Convertible Car Seat, Saturn

Evenflo Tribute LX Convertible Car SeatEvenflo makes some of the lightest car seats today, and the first one on our list is the Evenflo Tribute LX Convertible Car Seat, Saturn.  The Tribute LX is specifically designed to meet all federal safety standards while remaining compact in size and weight.  As you might expect, the lower price tag comes with some considerable tradeoffs.  First off, the Tribute does not have any cup holders.  More importantly, this model has considerably less padding both around the head area and on the sides than other car seats on our list.  Spills will also be much harder to clean up on this model since the fabric is not machine-washable.  A clear advantage in favor of the Evenflo Tribute LX is certainly its mobility.  If you travel frequently or need to purchase a car seat that you know you must take through an airport, then the Tribute is a clear winner.  But if you are shopping for a traditional car seat that will spend its entire lifecycle in your vehicle, then another model on our list if probably a better fit.

Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat, Paxton

Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car SeatAnother convertible car seat made by Evenflo is the SureRide.  Weighing only 14 lbs., this model is a clear step up from the Tribute.  The Evenflo SureRide DLX convertible car seat Paxton model comes with more padding, and the removable body pillow gives it an added level of comfortability.  The shoulder straps have six different positions, allowing you to find the right fit for your child.  At the same time, the straps look rough to the touch and would probably irritate sensitive skin.  Evenflo claims that all its models pass stress tests involving “energy levels approximately 2 times the Federal Crash Test Standards.”  Don’t let this marketing tactic fool you—every car seat on our list undergoes a variety of rigorous tests both through the federal government and in each company’s product development division.  The Evenflo SureRide DLX offers the same level of protection as other models on our list, and if saving money or finding a convenient portable unit are your primary goals, then the Tribute is probably the better choice.

Evenflo Symphony Convertible Car Seat

Evenflo Symphony DLX All-In-One Convertible Car SeatEvenflo manufactures several car seat models that give Graco, Britax and Chicco seats a run for their money.  The Evenflo Symphony convertible car seat is the perfect model for parents looking to purchase a model that can grow and adapt as their child changes.  Designed to fit babies as small as 5 lbs. but versatile enough to accommodate a child as heavy as 110 lbs., the Symphony promises you can install it in your vehicle in under 60 seconds.  The model has a unique self-retracting latch system, which lets you know when your little one is safe and secure.  The Symphony boasts three full layers of side impact protection as well as two cup holders.  Compare prices and shop around for different fabric colors—you can find this model for as little as $170 on Amazon in a turquoise blue color (and if I’m honest, it’s not the most attractive color available).

Best Chicco Convertible Car Seats

Chicco Nextfit Zip Convertible Car Seat Review

Chicco Nextfit Zip, NotteChicco is probably the most widely recognized brand in baby and infant transportation, and as you might expect, the company offers some of the most highly regarded units available today.  At the very high end of the market is the Chicco Nextfit Zip.  Weighing precisely 25 lbs., the Nextfit Zip accommodates infants as small as 5 lbs. or children as large as 65 lbs., making it a versatile and long-term transportation solution.  Chicco’s latching system makes it easy to install and secure, and the six-position headrest comes with nine different angles (again, most parents probably use only three or four).  One significant drawback for the Nextfit Zip is that it lacks cup holders, unlike some of the other models on our list.  There is however a removable cover over the car seat that you can throw in the washer.  This feature sets the Nextfit Zip above the rest.

Chicco’s Nextfit CX Convertible Car Seat Review

Chicco NextFit CX Convertible Car Seat, Jasper Chicco’s Nextfit CX (without the “Zip” in the name) is the exact same model as our previous entry, but you cannot remove the cover.  The key question for parents to consider when comparing the two: is spending an additional $27 worth the ability to wash the car seat?  The answer to this question depends entirely on your individual parenting style and preferences.  There’s no doubt that if your child needs a drink or some food while he or she is riding in the car, then the ability to wash the car seat itself is probably worth the extra money.  Most parents make these purchasing decisions before they deliver the baby, and it’s very common to request a car seat as a gift for a baby shower.  If that’s the case, then I would recommend going for the Nextfit Zip.

Chicco’s Nextfit Convertible Car Seat Review

Chicco NextFit Convertible Car Seat, SaffronThe final model on our list of best car seats is Chicco’s Nextfit (without the “CX” or the “Zip” in the name).  This model costs about the same as the other two, and it comes with many of the same features.  An important difference that you should consider is seat depth.  The Nextfit is shallower with only 20.5 inches of depth compared to 26.5 inches for the CX model.  Five inches may not seem like much, but it can be critical depending on the size of your vehicle.  If you drive a car with smaller backseats, then the five extra inches of space can make the difference between easily getting into the car or a struggle to strap your child in.  Make sure that you measure your vehicle first, and if you still aren’t sure what you should get, opt for the narrower model in the Nextfit.

Best Rear Facing Convertible Car Seat

All things considered, the best convertible car seat on the market today is the Chicco Nextfit Zip.  Customers who can afford the high price tag will not be disappointed by the product’s versatility and durability.  Even though the model lacks a cup holder, the machine-washable external layer ensures that the Nextfit Zip can withstand years of use.

Best Narrow Convertible Car Seat

The best narrow car seat is the MySize 65 by Graco.  With a depth of only 19.3 inches, you should be able to easily fit this unit into any standard compact vehicle.  The built-in cup holder is a bonus that will keep your child happy on long car rides.

Best Lightweight Convertible Car Seat

The best lightweight car seat on our list is the Evenflo Tribute.  It puts a premium on size by offering all the federally mandated safety requirements without any of the extra weight.  If you plan on installing and removing a car seat multiple times, or if you are planning to fly with your infant, then the 9.1 lbs. Evenflo Tribute is the right model for you.
